Price control hinders fight against fake drugs

MUMBAI: Price control of drugs in India is making it difficult for companies to fight against spurious medicines as they are unable to set off the resultant increase in cost, Nicolas Piramal Director Swati Piramal said today.

"The government does not provide for additional cost while fixing the prices for drugs," she said.
Spurious drugs could be tackled with special packaging such as fluorescent bottles, special sealing on caps, but that could be done at an additional investment, Piramal said, adding that the price control does not allow enough margin for quality packaging to prevent imitation by fake drug makers.
