This year, online pharmacies operating within the European Union will be able to demonstrate their compliance with local laws and regulations by displaying a new logo created to identify safe online pharmacies. Regulatory agencies within each country will be responsible for authorizing valid online pharmacies that operate within their borders.

A new logo has been created by the European Commission as a way to identify authorized online pharmacies, reports the European Medicines Agency (EMA). The logo is intended to help patients easily identify legally operating online pharmacies, and will link to a listing for their respective country of every authorized online pharmacy operating within their borders, according to the EMA.

European Commissioner for Health Tonio Borg remarked, "When buying medicines online, consumers must be aware that unless they buy from legally-operating online medicine suppliers, they run a risk of buying medicines that are falsified. The Commission has established a common logo for online pharmacies so consumers can stay safe."

According to a press release from the European Union, the logo will be appearing on pharmacy websites operating within the European Union by late in 2015.

The logo will feature the flag of the EU country that it represents in a small white rectangle, and the text will be customized to the country of its location, reports the press release.
