SON’s War Against Substandard Goods


The Standards Organisations of Nigeria (SON) was established by Act No. 56 of 1971, Act CAP 412 of the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Act also has amendments to Act No. 20 of 1976, No. 32 of 1984 and No. 18 of 1990. By Section 1 of Act No. 56 of 1971, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria was established with the functions and duties to 4 (1) (b) designate, establish and approve standards in respect of metrology, materials, commodities structure and process for certification of products, processes and industry throughout Nigeria and 5 (1) (a) organise tests and do everything necessary to ensure compliance with standards designated and approved by council (b) undertake investigations as necessary, into the quality assurance systems including certification of factories, products and laboratories.
