Crack down on fake drugs


The proposed survey of spurious drugs by the Drug Controller General of India should help quantify the extent of the problem and put an end to unsubstantiated numbers being used to buttress various claims.

That should, however, not detract from the urgent need of putting in place a system to unearth and prosecute manufacture and sale of spurious drugs. In a recent report, the European Commission has alleged that nearly 30% of the fake drugs coming into the EU are from India.
