Police questioned Kashmiri hospital employees after an infant allegedly died from an injection with expired medication.

Kashimir police questioned doctors and other employees of GB Pant Children’s Hospital Sonawar after a seven day old baby boy died on December 24, 2010, reported The Kashmir Times.

Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Nehru Park Muzzafar Ahmad told The Kashmir Times, “We questioned nine employees including doctors in connection with injecting [expired] injection[s] to [the] infant,” adding “Once the involved are nabbed they will be arrested.”

The infant’s father Advocate S A Khaliq blamed his son’s death the expired injections. Khaliq stated that after the baby’s first 72 hours on a ventilator, the infant was given expired injections for four days, reported The Kashmir Times.

According to Khaliq, the doctors at G B Panth hospital administered an expired injection of dopamine hydrochloride to the baby on Saturday morning. “My baby was referred to G B Panth hospital from L D Hospital on December 17 and was admitted to seventh IPPV. On Saturday morning, I was shocked to see that he has been given an expired injection…” he said to The Rising Kashmir Daily.

Doctors dispute the claim and issued a statement, “The baby boy died after battling for life for almost 12 hours in the G B Panth Children’s hospital, Sonawar due to cardio-pulmonary arrest. He was on ventilator when he breathed his last.”
