PSM Board member Dr. Marv Shepherd shared some of the details of the U.S. Pharmacopeia’s soon-to-be-released packaging and distribution updates to its National Formulary.
PSM Board member, Dr. Marv Shepherd, used Interchange 2014 as an opportunity to explain the changes and updates being made to the United States Pharmacopeia’s National Formulary.
Dr. Shepherd is currently serving on the Packaging, Storage, & Distribution Expert Committee for the 2015-2020 Council of Experts for the U.S. Pharmacopeia. Dr. Shepherd described the goals of the Packaging Storage and Distribution Expert Committee:
- Develop and update USP standards for packaging systems and their materials of construction (metal, glass, plastic elastomeric).
- Revise packaging definitions including storage requirements for compendial articles.
- Create and revise guidance for the good distribution of compendial articles; good packaging & re-packaging practices for both extractable and leachable products.
Dr. Shepherd also described their global annual healthcare supplier survey, designed to find out suppliers’ concerns and issues with distribution of healthcare products, including pharmaceuticals.
The survey found that health care suppliers have a great deal of concern about product security, greater in fact than their concerns about managing supply chain costs. Concerns about product security were greatest among survey respondents in the Asia-Pacific region.
